Building A Tiny Course Empire: Where To Start

Creating a suite of tiny courses can be a fulfilling way to share your knowledge more widely without increasing your client-facing time. It’s also a brilliant strategy for generating passive income.

Here’s where many course creators stumble:

  1. They focus too much on what they wish to teach rather than designing their courses around the specific transformations that their audience seeks.

  2. They are not discoverable via their ideal clients’ everyday online searches, which means they must maintain a consistent presence on social media to drive sales.

  3. As a result, they end up with a beautifully crafted course that nobody feels compelled to buy, and the passion they had for their creation is quickly snuffed out.

My journey into course creation has taken a different path; here’s why…

My first course was emerged out of a clear need I identified in the market—hello Human Design strategy! This need first became apparent through the rising visitors to a blog article I had written on the topic.

As interest continued to grow, I decided to host a live workshop on the same topic to my existing connections, later selling the recording via the blog for $50.

After a few weeks, sales began to trickle in without any active marketing efforts on my part. And in the following 12-months, I averaged 10 sales per month, earning a tidy sum of $6,000 in legitimate passive income.

The workshop recording was then converted to a lovely digestible tiny course of 8 lessons that could be watched in about an hour. And as the body of work continued to be upgraded, so did the price of the course.

Slowly I added other courses that were also created in alignment with my Human Design strategy, which meant they pretty much sold themselves without much involvement from me.

Those original students went on to buy my other courses and offerings; meanwhile I focused on creating additional pathways for people to discover my work — so that my courses would continue to sell.

Start by giving your attention to these 3 things:

What I hope you are beginning to see is that ‘course creation’ itself is not the first step to building your tiny course empire. So before you start crafting your course outline, give your attention to:

  1. Your Design: Understanding the role and gifts that are embedded into your being will support you in creating a course that people want to buy. Both Human Design and Creator Types have been immensely helpful for me in this regard.

  2. Your Message: Being able to define the transformation that each of your courses provides, and building a messaging foundation around this that is an essential foundation for your marketing and sales copy.

  3. Your Discoverability: If you don’t want to have to be visible all the time talking about your course, then start giving attention to being found outside of socials now — before you start creation your course.

I share more about how I’ve harnessed my design and created content assets that lead to course sales on repeat in my How To Market Quietly & Still Be Successful workshop.

Hope to see you there!
